| Larnaca in the Southern part of the island is the third largest town with many modern development projects and is the main port of entry and exit into Cyprus. Historical sites include the 13th century city of Kition, St. Lazarus' Church, built over his tomb, and the Tekke mosque. The Finikoudes beach promenade stretches from the small boat harbour, down to the 17th century Ottoman fortress and lined with palm trees, restaurants, various clubs, bars, pubs and shops it is one of the most popular meeting places in Larnaca. Behind the promenade is the old quarter with its narrow streets and many interesting shops with a wide variety of goods including souvenirs, clothing and jewellery. With many of the hotels being near the centre of the town and within easy reach of most facilities and shops, its long stretches of sandy beaches, various water sports, other facilities and amenities and its fairly central location make Larnaca a popular tourist area. The Cataclysm party is held at the Salt Lake every year in memory of Noah's courageous life-saving exploit during the cataclysm. Others claim that the celebration has its roots in Greek mythology. |
